Annual Report-2009 |
| |
FHD again signed an agreement with the World Food Program (WFP) for similar project covering 2400 (Two thousand four hundred) ultra-poor women. FHD successfully completed the project and the phase -out groups are in the process for inclusion under regular program of FHD. It is to be noted that these people are often bypassed by the conventional NGO interventions and they are at the threshold enterprise group. Prior to joining WFP-FHD project, they had been in the survival group. Pulling the huge number of ultra-poor persons from survival group to enterprise group, it was really a great challenge for FHD. And FHD is hopeful that it would be able to face the challenge in cooperation with donor community. Under phase-II, FHD opened up 14 literacy centers in metropolitan city of Chittagong aimed at pulling out the children engaged in the worst form of hazardous occupations. The collaboration with the local government institutions has been further strengthened as coverage of disposal of household garbage by FHD is on the rise. This is a unique example of collaboration between the NGO and the Dhaka City Corporation. Using the comparative advantage of the two entities, the household garbage operation is going on well and the scope of healthy atmosphere has been opened. The people of the Capital city now have been saved from the nasty atmosphere here and there. Although the government of Bangladesh achieved one of the Millennium Development Goal i.e. Universal primary educations, still there are pockets where children do not have access to primary education. Under the state-sponsored project of the government of Bangladesh titled "Reaching the Out-of-School School Children" FHD opened up literacy centers for such school-age children in different places of Bogra district. Beginning in the year 2002, the Sanitation and Water Supply project continued in this year increasing the coverage of sanitation significantly. Due to the increase in coverage it is expected that the incidence of water-borne diseases will show decline. The Gender Resource Center was busy round the year for conducting training sessions for FHD project participants, trainees of other organizations.. For capacity building of FHD, qualified staff members have been inducted in the senior management. They have proven track record with the leading NGOs of the country in the areas of program management, research, training and micro-finance. I thank all of our well wishers, dedicated staff members and the project participants, scattered over in different parts of the country for making the year 2008 a success.

The Gender Resource Center (GRC)
The GRC was very much busy with different events around the whole year. The local NGOs and the International NGO conducted different training both for women and men on new farm technology in almost every month. The GRC provided them with living accommodation for the training personnel, training room with training aids, food & snacks. The rural setting of the center was one of the attractions for the trainees. Due to its location, the trainees had easy access to crop field for practical work.
The adolescent girls used the facility of the center every month during the period under report. They organized and conducted a series of workshops on such issues as child marriage cause and consequence, reproductive health care for the adolescents, career planning, development of small business, female education and so on. They also borrowed information generative materials from the center for reading at home and duly returned them to center.
Women of the locality also made good use of the center. They held discussion on matters of common concern including dowry, domestic violence, income generation, addiction of male members of family, reproductive health care services and so on. Film show also organized for them on themes like women movement, classical literary works, spread of HIV/AIDS, nutrition, safe motherhood and homestead vegetable gardening. The center also organized and conducted occupational training courses for adolescent girls and women. The training courses were need-based, tailor made and with practical orientation. Following shows the activities carried out at GRC during the period under report.

| Environmental Sanitation, Hygiene & Water Supply in Rural Areas |
Detailed Description |
Began in 2002 the project continued in Dewanganj upa-zila under Jamalpur district. At its inception, the benchmark survey showed the coverage of sanitation was less than 15%. For men and children, there was no fixed place for defecation. Female had to use bushes or open latrine for the purpose. The benchmark survey also showed that it was not only poverty rather ignorance was largely liable for very low coverage of sanitation. Most of the people do not know the consequence of not having sanitary latrine, cause and consequence of water-borne diseases and necessity of hygiene practice. Social mobilization activities have been carried out at massive scale. Different actors have been involved in the social mobilization process. |
| |
Till 31st December 2008, the coverage of sanitation stood at 95%. The hygiene practice has been improved significantly. Practice of washing hands with soap after defecation and before meal is on the rise, hotels & restaurants keep soap and towels for customers, food stuff remains covered, small children learned to wash hands before having meals and so on. Scene of open latrine along the river and canals is disappearing rapidly. This has been a significant change and it is possible due to active cooperation of the local government institutions, central government administration at local level, students, traders and common people. |
